Top mistakes to avoid when window cleaning

When it comes to dirt on your property, nowhere shows up the grime as much on a window. Dirty windows not only give a bad first impression to visitors, but it also reduces the amount of natural light getting inside your property. One thing no one wants after spending time cleaning their windows is to find the results are patchy or covered with streaks. Follow our guide below to help avoid common mistakes and ensure you evade those unwanted streaks.

The right weather

A nice hot sunny day can seem like the perfect time to clean your windows; however, hot weather will allow streaks to quickly form and dry so leaving hard to remove marks. If you are having a heatwave that is lasting for weeks, we would advise either work in the shade or to clean your windows as the sun gets low in the sky.

Remove the dust before you start

If you have a layer of dust over your windows and window frame, we would advise you brush your windows before you start. It is a common mistake to not dust first, but dusting will help reduce the amount of soap, water and work needed later on. If you have blinds it may be worth giving them a quick clean to remove any dust. If you have a window screen then you may wish to take it down to give it a wash with hot soapy water, let it dry and then return it to your window.

Get those soap suds bubbling

Trying to save money by using less soap can just lead to poor end results with streaks all across your windows; therefore, don’t hold back on that window cleaner!

Dry your windows

Many people will make the mistake in using old cotton rags to dry their windows, which will not yield the best results. Microfibre cloths are a great tool to remove water spots, smudges and dirt from glass windows without causing scratching.

Squeegees are not always the best solution

Squeegees can create great results but if you are not careful the dirty water can pool elsewhere and create dirty patches on your property. The dripping may mean it could be best not to use a squeegee unless you want to take the time to tackle the dripping water.

Simplify cleaning your windows

When you go to clean your windows, you don’t need to clean all of them in one day. You may find just breaking it down into room-by-room chunks can make the task far more manageable. A quick tip, if you clean outside with a vertical wiping motion and inside the window with a horizontal wiping motion you will be easily able to identify what side of the window streaks have formed.
